A new study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has helped to shed light on the link between Valtrex and herpes labialis. The study is an open-label trial of Valtrex (valacyclovir) for the treatment of herpes labialis, a type of viral infection in which patients with genital herpes experience painful, prolonged, and painful periods. Patients in the Valtrex group were also assigned to receive the placebo pills for four weeks. The study was designed to assess the safety and efficacy of Valtrex in patients with genital herpes, as well as to evaluate the potential for treatment-resistant herpes. The study recruited patients who had been diagnosed with herpes labialis and had been treated with Valtrex for herpes labialis since 2000. The trial is open-label and is the first to show that the medication can effectively treat genital herpes in patients with genital herpes.

Valtrex is approved for the treatment of herpes labialis in adults and adolescents 18 years and older.
